The essentials

  • AI-first TypeScript background jobs and workflow framework
  • Starting at $20/month, open source self-hostable
  • Automatic retry, logging, real-time dashboard, queues
  • Suited to TypeScript/Next.js engineers building long AI pipelines

What is Trigger.dev?

Trigger.dev is a TypeScript background jobs framework designed for modern AI applications. The problem it solves: LLM calls are long, can fail, and don't fit in a standard API route with a 30-second timeout. Trigger.dev lets you run long jobs (transcription, image generation, RAG pipeline) in the background with automatic retry, real-time logging and a monitoring dashboard. The code is normal TypeScript with decorators.

Strengths

Native TypeScript, clean syntax

Trigger.dev jobs are written like ordinary TypeScript with a minimal SDK. No YAML, no custom DSL. The learning curve is very low for a TypeScript engineer.

Designed for AI workloads

Long timeouts, intelligent retries and log streaming are specific needs of LLM pipelines. Trigger.dev is designed for this.

Real-time job dashboard

Seeing jobs execute in real time, inspecting logs, relaunching a failed job: the dashboard is clear and useful for debugging.

Limits

TypeScript only

No Python SDK. For Python teams, Temporal or Celery are the alternatives.

More recent than Temporal

For enterprise-critical workloads requiring strict guarantees, Temporal is more proven. Trigger.dev is younger.

Price

Free up to a certain volume, premium from $20/month. Self-hostable. Check trigger.dev.

Alternatives

For TypeScript workloads with enterprise guarantees: Temporal. For Python jobs: Celery or RQ. For visual workflows: n8n.

Verdict

Trigger.dev is the best choice for Next.js/TypeScript teams that need background jobs for their AI pipelines. The DX is excellent and the price is reasonable.
